The Enchanting Island of Corfu

Spread the love

The Greek island of Corfu is located in the Ionian Sea. It is the second largest in the Ionian island group with a very long history of welcoming holidaymakers. As far back as the 19th century, it was a popular destination for European royal families. Even today, it is still popular with Russian oligarchs, and members of the famous Rothschild family still holiday on the island.

When Gerald Durrell released his book about his childhood on the island in the late 50s, the island was discovered by the masses and tourism took off. From that point on tourism on the island grew. Today, it is the major industry on the island, which means you are all but guaranteed a warm welcome.

Wild and unspoilt Corfu

Despite massive growth in the tourism sector, the island has managed to remain largely unspoilt. The beach at Halikoúnas is a great example. This wild beach is popular with birdwatchers and other nature lovers.

Íssos is another unspoilt beach that is bounded by Juniper groves. It is famous for being a film location for the James Bond film – For Your Eyes Only. Windsurfers love this out of the way spot, and the little taverna that is a 15-minute walk from the beach.

The holiday resorts of Corfu

Naturally, most people want a more traditional holiday experience when they visit the island. They are looking for a resort that offers them the beach during the day and plenty of restaurants, bars and nightclubs to enjoy in the evening.

On Corfu, there is plenty of choice for people who want this kind of holiday. Here is our round up of the best of them:

This relatively small village offers a surprisingly wide range of hotel accommodation. It is a popular destination with northern Europeans, so there are plenty of British bars and restaurants. In the village itself most of the bars and restaurants are Greek, so you can get the best of both worlds if you stay here.

Sidari is very much a modern holiday resort, which offers a huge choice of hotels, bars and restaurants. If you are looking for a lively nightlife this resort town is a great option. Those who want a quieter place to stay just need to book an apartment on the edge of the town or opt to stay in one of the villages just outside the town.

Corfu town

If you are looking for luxury accommodation, Corfu town is a great option. This is also a good destination for holidaymakers who are after something more than sun, sea and sand.

The picturesque old town is full of beautiful Venetian style buildings that are stunning to look at. If you find yourself in this part of Corfu, the Old Fortress is definitely worth a visit.

You can get some fantastic panoramic views from Bella Vista. After a morning wondering around the town, relaxing on Glyfada beach is a great way to round off the day.

Most of Corfu is small scale, but they pack a lot into their small resorts. The island is a quirky holiday destination that seems to get under the skin of a lot of holidaymakers, which is why so many people return year after year.
