Why Malta makes an ideal winter holiday destination

Spread the love

If you are looking for good winter weather in a beautiful tranquil setting, Malta is a great option. This article is for those who want to enjoy a cheap winters holiday to Malta. Here we explain how to find the best deals and tell you a little about what the island has to offer in the winter.

Finding the best deals

Using our simple search engine, you can easily find great Malta holiday packages at a low price. If you know which airport you want to fly from look for a flight and accommodation package. On the other hand, if you do not mind where you fly from do an accommodation search first. Make a list of the best accommodation deals and look for the best flight deals for those dates.

The winter climate in Malta

During the winter, the daytime temperature rarely drops below 15C. Most days there are around five hours of sunshine. However, you do get rain and it can be quite windy, so you have to go prepared for these weather conditions.

In January and February it rains around ten times and in March 8 or 9 times, so take a brolly just in case. However, most of the time, the rain only lasts for a couple of hours then the sun comes out again.

What to do during the winter in Malta

The island is much quieter than it is during the summer. This makes it far easier to get around and see the sights. Most of the popular tourist destinations are open for at least part of the day during the winter months.

For example, there is plenty to do and see in Mdina. The trackless train tour still runs and there is the Roman Villa to see.

Another site that is well worth a winter visit is the Limestone Heritage Park & Gardens. There you can try your hand at stone sculpting and visit the animal park while you are there.

Segway tours

The countryside comes alive as the rain feeds the plants and flowers, what can sometimes be quite a barren landscape becomes blanketed in green. It is a good time of the year to take a Segway tour. There are several city tours available, but also some nice village tours too. The Dingli village Segway tour lets you enjoy Malta’s lush green country scenery.

Quad bikes and 4 x4 tours

You can also get out and about on a quad bike or in a 4 x4 jeep if you prefer to be driven. This is a great way to visit the island of Gozo.

Eat, drink and relax

During the winter months enjoying a few hours sun bathing is perfectly possible. If it turns a little cold, you can put on a light coat or simply retire to a restaurant for a long lunch.

The food on Malta is wonderful and in the winter, you get the chance to sample dishes that are not so popular in the summer because they are not light enough. Stuffat tal-fenek (rabbit stew), minestra, which is an extremely thick vegetable stew served with fresh bread and a drizzle of oil are both wonderful. Alijotta, which is a garlicky fish soup, is especially popular during the winter.

As you can see, Malta has a lot to offer during the winter and it is easy to find great deals at that time of the year.
