Mediterranean and Canaries remain most popular summer destinations

Spread the love

UK holidaymakers’ love of Spain is well known, and shows no signs of dying out, with the country’s Mediterranean resorts proving popular as summer holiday destinations in 2013.

According to figures from ABTA – The Travel Association – the first weekend of the English school summer holidays on July 26th-29th saw around two million British tourists head abroad on holiday, with many more opting for a domestic break thanks to the good weather and cost considerations.

Spain as a whole is the UK’s top holiday destination, but resorts in the country’s Mediterranean region, and in the Canary Islands, are particular favourites.

Speaking on July 25th, ABTA chief executive Mark Tanzer said: “This weekend sees the start of the main summer holiday getaway and it’s one of the busiest of the year. Millions of holidaymakers will be heading off overseas with the Mediterranean countries attracting the lion’s share of visitors.”

With the initial rush out of the way, here are just a few resorts in mainland Spain, the Balearics and Tenerife that could be worth considering for a family holiday.

Alcudia, Majorca

Alcudia is a popular holiday destination for families, and gives you the chance to enjoy the surroundings of north Majorca, rather than heading to the busier ‘party island’ of neighbouring Ibiza.

Perfect as a beach resort or for historical interest, Alcudia is now subject to certain protections designed to ensure it does not become over-developed, following a period of significant tourism growth in the late 20th century.

Head to its Old Town to see the 14th century walls and Roman ruins, and sample local cuisines at one of the many restaurants clustered around the marina.

Playa De Las Americas, Tenerife

Head to one of Tenerife’s most popular destinations – Playa De Las Americas – for a blend of culture and leisure that’s suitable for families with children of all ages.

Siam Park, the water park that opened in 2008, promises an experience that is suitable for all levels of swimming proficiency, with lifeguards to help those who are less confident in the water to enjoy the flumes.

Benidorm, Mainland Spain

Benidorm is a popular, affordable holiday option for families that has found new fame recently thanks to the ITV comedy-drama series named after it.

While that is a parody of the truth, Benidorm has plenty to offer, from beaches to nightlife that combine to make it an ideal family holiday destination.
